What's in a name?
Let’s get to the question that everyone is dying to ask. How did this trail get its name?
Here’s a quote from the trail creator. “Well, truth be told when you are out traipsing through the desert either looking for a route to put a trail or actually digging the trail, you find random stuff. I found an old KFC bucket. I am a vegetarian and my find somehow turned into the chicken being lucky – even though it wasn’t so lucky because it had already been killed and eaten. Nonetheless, it stuck and now we have a trail called Kentucky Lucky Chicken or KLC for short.”
…Well, okay then. You can read more about that, here.
I read online that you need a four wheel drive to get to the trailhead. This is far from true. I’ve learned that some people either can’t drive, or just simply don’t know what they’re talking about when they comment this on apps like AllTrails. HOWEVER, this could possibly be true if we had a freak rain fall, because it IS a dirt road. My Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross did just fine. You could drive a Toyota Corolla and make it up that bad boy.
Anyway, I digress.
When we got to the trailhead, I asked a biker about the loop and she said it was best to just continue up the road until you get to the gate, then cross the gate and explore.
…So we drove to the top, parked at the gate, and realized…
…that we had bypassed the entire trail. Since it was over 100 degrees outside, exploring the top and seeing the views instead of hiking in the heat did sort of make the most amount of sense.
So we simply walked the road up to the top, surrounded by beautiful views of St George and the Bloomington area. The actual trail goes around the side of the mountain and we saw a few bikers below. It definitely looked like a great bike trail.
The Kentucky Lucky Chicken Trail circles a mountain southeast of St George called “Webb Hill.” This mountain has a cluster of radio, television, and internet towers at the top with signs warning of the radioactive area. You’ll see little trails going around the radio tower area. That’s how you get to these amazing 360 views of the city.
My dad actually did this “hike” with me, but he’s deathly afraid of heights. So I went by myself to the cliff edges and got all my shots with a tripod. Because I’m not an amateur.
So there you have it, folks. Your easy, cheat-your-way-to-some-views, version of Kentucky Lucky Chicken Trail.
Let's Get Creepy
Here’s a fact that has nothing to do with hiking this trail: skeletal remains of a male were found on this mountain. The bones lay undiscovered for what’s estimated to be about 80 years. That’s right. Teenage hikers then found the skeleton on Webb Hill in 1998.
You’re welcome.

You always capture some gorgeous views! That over 100 degree weather had to be harsh though. Thanks for the virtual tour. I don’t think I’ll forget the name Kentucky Lucky Chicken.
Thank you Ana! The heat can be pretty brutal here. I’d like to say you get used to it, however….you do not. haha
This is so amazing! I miss hiking so much! Here in Los Angeles, the trails get pretty crowded so I haven’t been going. Can’t wait to start again though!
Oh I bet! I loved doing Runyon Canyon when I lived there!
Love the name of this trail and the beautiful pics! My husband 3 sons and I were avid hikers back when we lived in Arizona and I sure miss it here in the flat lands in Indiana
